I get it all too well…so much more I admire and understand of him with each passing day since he has gone. While I thought we were close and I honored him in our time together, I seem to discover more and more that I would have asked him about or done for him with each passing day. I can only hope my family recognizes me one day to be even a small portion of the man, provider, counselor, example and friend he was too me. But times and perceptions have changed and there are times I am grateful he does not have to see or encounter what is now. Whether it is a child that can not wait to grow up, an adult wishing they were a child again, or any of us wishing we could go back, change or relive a moment in time, we all tend to look for change or second chances in life. There are often examples and valuable lessons to be learned about this which we sometimes do not recognize. This is often because they are overlooked or not seen due to the competing content and distractions grabbing our attention. Other times they are found in places we do not expect so we miss them-such as hidden within movies or entertainment. In the movie “Click”, Adam Sandler is granted such a second chance. In this movie he is able to fast forward, rewind and watch any part of his life. He had allowed distractions and work to take priority and he was not there when his father died. So in the movie he was then granted the ability to rewatch the last time he had seen his father alive. Which was an eye opening moment of disappointing clarity for him. Having the ability to “watch ourselves” as an outside observer to our life can give us an enlightening perspective. It allows us to see how we really are in ways that perhaps we did not intend but more so, did not even recognize while in the event itself. We all have the power to avoid regret and the longing for second chances by simply being more present, attentive, and honestly recognizing how we are treating those around us as it happens. Our actions, invested time and full attention are testaments to our care and value of a person and relationship. Distractions, sharp tongue responses, a lack of eye contact, empathy and missing gestures of affection or concern are just a few hallmarks we may not recognize at the time, or even over time, which we will later bemoan and wish to undo, but can not. We often do not say or do these things intentionally, or with intended malice, we just do not take time to think or recognize them in ourselves. We are much quicker to see it in others, as we are an outside observer, which is why Adam when reviewing “ the last time he saw his father alive” was a moment of recognition- but too late. I often recognize recurring themes in multiple places. Recently I’ve heard a lot about always giving a hug as you depart from loved ones and references to never knowing when the last time you will see them or have that chance to say “I love you” or give that hug will be. Too often our love is obscured by disagreements, busy schedules, misunderstanding or distractions of many kinds. Seeing this, it became clear to me. I have lived the unexpected and realize; We all just need to keep our love, top of mind and its expression a priority at all times. Our lives, calendars , and focus often get so crowded with the trivial that we loose sight of the people and relationships that should matter the most, often without even recognizing it happening. Sometimes you hear a passing comment that takes on depths and meaning of its own. As I witnessed a conversation between an older man and woman last week, I heard the following words spoken.
“ The older you get the less relevant you become.”
Beyond the temptation to confine this comment to “elder neglect”, it begins much sooner, unnoticed and unrecognized. As the distractions of life reduce the time spent together with our loved ones, parents and grandparents. What a difference it makes in the hearts of our loved ones, parents and grandparents to be present with and involved with them as we too grow older. To simply engage in true conversation, spending time with them in an attentive manner, or even a just a phone call if you can’t connect in person. I wish I had understood this to the extent I do now much earlier in life. So grateful to see some of the bonding of those near me with their father at this time. I know first hand how it makes him feel to have visits and regular phone calls and am so happy to see it. As we finally recognize missed opportunities and subtle changes in habits and time spent in distractions or other places over time thst have altered or removed time from what relationships once were, it can teach how to refocus and regain the time, sincerity and closeness that once was if we allow and prioritize to do so. Oh how accurate this is and how needed these days. From Warren Buffet to Jesus, the greats have said to not follow the crowd. Too much herd mentality these days and it’s often headed the wrong direction.

Proven Wisdom- unfortunately there is often a huge disconnect between those who recognize the limitations of time & opportunity and those who do not…. Until the time snd opportunity has passed. Never fail to recognize or take for granted an opportunity to be close to those you love and express that love clearly.

His journey was very public as he lost his wife a couple years prior and he was left with his young daughter to raise. Their story was one of love and set to music which was a large part of their life. As I saw the man and his daughter off to the side apart from the crowd, and in their own world so to speak, my attention was drawn to them by the innocent amplified love and peace projecting from them. This man was genuine, loving, kind and meek in person just as seen in the media that had covered his story. I can not adequately explain the contrast of their quiet meekness and the powerful amplification of love they held. I wish everyone could feel that example of influence. As I thought on my experience this quote came to mind which I set to an image a friend recently took. Love is the answer.

As stated in The Shawshank Redemption movie this would also include “HOPE.” The person who continues to strive for something by their hope for it and actions in pursute of it, even after seemingly giving up on it for a season, or when it seems it just isn’t going to happen, this person is a true example of hope. They keep trying. Over time however, there can be a fine line between hope, renewed hope, and eventual disappointment. That “ crazy inside” mentioned, can be the times of contemplation as to whether we failed and to give up or if there is still hope and we just need the renewed strength to try again. They say to try, try and try again if you don’t succeed. Yet circumstance and nature may show us that there may be a time to rest or renew strength between our efforts to pursue that which we hope for. We may not always recognize the importance of what others hope for. Nor the true value and sincerity of those whom you see puting forth efforts and holding on to, or finding renewed hope for something. Pray for and support those you care for in their hopes- especially this time of year, for many a year end goal set out of renewed hope can have a greater consequence for its outcome whether a success or failure. I am grateful for my examples of hope and the the possibility of the things I still hope for. How often should we give thanks? Around Thanksgiving everyone seems to say that’s not the only time. Seems fair and balanced that if we receive the blessing daily, we should give thanks daily as well. When we feel true gratitude for what we receive, giving daily thanks is not an obligatory task or timely metric to check off and complete but a sincere and meaningful expression of gratitude. While probably better than nothing, a generic “ thanks for all you do” is sometimes an overshadowing generality in which we miss many individual blessings and acts of service. I concluded this as I seem to continue to contemplate the loss of my father and what he truly meant to me and did for me. While we had a very good relationship I feel another sense of lost opportunity that I never told him outright and specifically what a good father he was and how I am aware of the blessings he provided me repeatedly every day from food and shelter to medical care, encouragement, being a good example and so much more. While many would say that’s what a parent is supposed to do, it is clear that many do not so I was truly blessed. Perhaps because it’s only now that I understand what he did for me to this degree. Perhaps someone else who reads this will have the chance to know the connection and joy of giving thanks whether to God or another person while the opportunity is available.

We all share this struggle. In the sequel of the movie Avatar, Jake Sully says, “ A father protects - that’s what gives him meaning -
Saving their lives that’s all that matters - saving your family.” Though a fictional character he encapsulates a lost and unpopular truth that a true father is supposed to provide and protect. He even acknowledged “that’s what gives him meaning.” When a father (or any caregiver) fails to or is prevented from protecting those we love, it is the equivalent of an identity crisis that is seen spreading thru society today.
Jesus, also looked across the city of Jerusalem and acknowledged his inability to protect those he loved at that time due to their own resistance, pride and sense of indipendance, when he said “ how often I would have gethered you together, and you would not.”
I use the far contrast of these 2 examples to show that in spite of our many differences, we all share certain things in common. As good and proper fathers (mothers or caregivers) we want to protect and serve those whom we love, even when they may not understand our intent. Often the rejection or withdrawal from our efforts to do so feel like personal rejection or failure especially when we have held that role for years or even decades. When it has been our highest priority and purpose it often takes time to transition and find new “meaning”and purpose. When we see Jesus deal with the issue, we should know it’s not our failures but an inescapable part of humanity we must all contend with. Not everyone is successful in doing so. While I relate to this as a Father and husband, the same is true for mothers and caregivers of any age as they faithfully battle for the safety and security of those we care for in the midst of so many harmful distractions, dangers and influences. So much more could be said and done, yet Love is the answer. Recognize the good will and care for you when a loved one tries to do something for you or help.

For parents and grandparents of children the physical expression may be a nurturing hug or cuddle with a child so they feel the love and continued safety. Even if our “ primary love language “ may not be physical touch, there is still a need for it and when we truly value and care about a relationship we want to meet its needs. Speaking their language helps us understand and communicate better avoiding misunderstanding or disappointment. It is also worth noting that there are several examples in principle of this taught among several parables.
